International Women’s Day!

On this day, as we celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future, Kayan – Feminist Organization would like to wish you an inspirational and empowering International Women’s Day!

The International Women’s Day theme of 2011 is “Pathways to decent work for women.” Kayan works towards the realization of this goal, allowing Palestinian women in Israel a space to actualize their rights to personal and social status equality, social security, fair employment, and protection from sexual harassment in the workplace. As a part of The Haifa Women’s Coalition, Kayan operates in solidarity alongside Isha l’Isha – Haifa Feminist Center, Haifa Rape Crisis Center and Aswat – Palestinian Gay Women in order to address the diverse needs of women in Israel. On this day we would like to celebrate the significant changes and attitudinal shifts in both women’s and society’s notions about women’s equality and empowerment in Israel, and abroad.

Yet despite these advances, women worldwide continue to struggle to find equal employment, political power, and social rights. In Israel today, Palestinian-Arab women constitute the poorest, least paid and least educated population group in Israel, facing multiple layers of discrimination both as members of a marginalized national minority and as women within a patriarchal societal structure. Much more needs to be done to close the gender gap in critical areas such as power and decision-making and violence against women.

We hope you take some time today to reflect on the progress we have made, as well as the crucial work that remains to be done to help advance the status of Palestinian women in Israel, both in their personal lives, and in society.

From all of us at Kayan, thank you for your activism on behalf of Palestinian women in Israel.
